Today, on the food page of GazetteOnline is another story about the Bacon Explosion. It looks delicious, but this part of the story is what scares me away from trying to make this:

“The nutritional information on this thing is just plain scary: The original recipe comes in at nearly 5,000 calories and 500 grams of fat. Minus the barbecue sauce, we’re probably knocking off a couple hundred calories, but it’s still a whopper. According to a blog post on WebMD, each 1/2-inch-slice serving of the original Bacon Explosion contains 506 calories, 43.5 g fat, 82 mg cholesterol and 1263 mg of sodium.

So yeah, brace your circulatory system. And maybe just make this a once-in-a-lifetime treat.”

Wow. That’s a lot of junk in your system. It makes me want to eat an apple or broccoli right now. So my question, to you, dear reader, is: Has anyone in Eastern Iowa tried making this? Please, let me know.

Bacon is everywhere, it’s the food topic these days that just won’t quit. The Willimgton, N.C., newspaper foodies have declared February the Month of Bacon. (The fact that it’s heart health month as well cracks me up.)

They are writing a bacon story for each day of the month. Today, it’s bacon you can wear. I’m not joking.

Related, you can add bacon to any Web site.

If I were a hog, I’d be so worried about my squigly little tail these days. By the way, has anyone seen Miss Piggy these days? I know she’s from Iowa, and we produce a lot of pork….

Notes from Portland

I spent most of last week in Portland, visiting some old friends and their new baby. And their kitchen.

The good news: In my month without a kitchen of my own, I haven’t forgotten how to cook. (Though I did manage to fill the entire first floor of their condo with smoke while making Peach-Spiced Lamb Chops on a skillet instead of a grill pan. Again, really sorry guys.)

The other good news: I did make it out into the city for one really great meal (fresh oysters, some wine and buckwheat crepes stuffed with leeks, shrimp, crab, fiddleheads and cheese at Higgins, a contemporary Pacific Northwest restaurant that uses fresh, seasonal ingredients)…. And a doughnut.

maple bacon doughnutThe donut was from VooDoo Doughnut, a tiny bakery that looks more like a divey punk-rock bar than a bakery and is known for it’s unusual, experimental doughnut recipes. Including what’s got to be Homer Simpson’s dream food: a bacon donut.

I’m sorry to say that I went for something that sounded slightly less artery clogging. I’m already regretting it. I mean, just because the name of the doughnut included a fruit — it was ”strawberry lemonade” — doesn’t mean it was really any more healthy than that crazy breakfast mishmash. Now I’ve missed my chance! D’oh!
