There was a question about where the excellent cake came from and what was in it. David Lee sent along this message:
It was a special-order sponge cake from Chiu Quon Bakery, 2242 S. Wentworth Ave., Chicago (Chinatown).

He wasn’t sure on the ingredients, but it was light and delicious. I wish some would still be around for the actual Chinese New Year.

David Lee, a copy editor at The Gazette, brought in a cake to celebrate his birthday (29 of course) his two-year anniversary at paper here in Cedar Rapids and advance of the Chinese New Year.

I’ve never eaten cake with cantaloupe before, and it was a delicious surprise. Extra points if you know what it says on the cake. (Happy Chinese New Year.)

On the lamb

Thanks to Shirley Alexander of Cedar Rapids, who called this morning to let me know about a local shop that sells the lamb pans required to make a cake that was featured in today’s Accent section: The gift shop at the National Czech and Slovak Museum & Library sells them for $16.

Here’s a link to the lamb cake story (and recipe) as it originally appeared in the Chicago Tribune.

And here’s a sheet with tons of lamb cake decorating tips and ideas from Wilton.
